About Counselling and Depression

Posted on

Many people experience low moods from time to time, but people suffering from depression can find it difficult to function in day to day life.

Depression happens along a spectrum from mild to severe and can be of a chronic or long term nature, or acute with sudden onset.

Common Symptoms of depression:

    • Disliking yourself or other people in general
    • Being preoccupied with negative thoughts, always seeing the worst in everything
    • Feeling irritable and intolerant
    • Lacking in energy and finding daily tasks an effort
    • Sleep disturbances, whether too much or too little
    • Altered appetite, eating too much or too little
    • Isolating yourself from others who would otherwise provide your support network
    • Tearfulness or shutting down of emotions

Counselling can provide a space for you to express how you are feeling, helping you to identify coping strategies and ways to self-manage your symptoms. In cases of acute depression, there is often an underlying reason that can be explored in counselling, such as bereavement, loss of job or marital and family difficulties. Discussing these problems can alleviate the symptoms and make informed decisions clearer for you.

In cases of severe depression, where your mood is very low, you may experience thoughts of self-harm. It is important to contact your doctor if this is the case as you may require medical treatment to alleviate your symptoms. Counselling can be used as a form of therapy along side medication from your doctor; it is important to discuss this with your doctor and counsellor for an effective collaborative approach.
